About Bahir Dar & Lake Tana
Bahir Dar sits on the southern shore of Lake Tana, the largest lake in Ethiopia and the primary source of the Blue Nile. Scattered across the lake are ancient island monasteries, many dating back centuries and preserving religious manuscripts, paintings, and crowns of Ethiopian emperors. Nearby lies the Blue Nile Falls (Tis Issat), historically one of the most powerful waterfalls in Africa before dam construction reduced its flow. Even today it remains one of Ethiopia’s most iconic natural sites.
