About Erta Ale (Danakil Depression)

The Danakil Depression is one of the most geologically active places on Earth. Temperatures regularly exceed 45°C and parts of the region sit below sea level. Erta Ale volcano contains one of the few persistent lava lakes in the world. Nearby Dallol presents surreal mineral landscapes colored by sulfur, iron, and salt deposits. Despite the harsh environment, Afar communities have long harvested salt from the desert and transport it by camel caravan. It is a dramatic example of human survival in extreme geology.
