About Gondar
Gondar was the imperial capital of Ethiopia during the 17th and 18th centuries. Its royal enclosure, Fasil Ghebbi, contains a cluster of stone castles that look almost medieval European but were built by Ethiopian emperors. The nearby Debre Berhan Selassie Church is famous for its ceiling painted with rows of angelic faces, one of the most iconic images in Ethiopian art. Gondar blends imperial architecture, religious heritage, and vibrant festivals such as Timket, the Ethiopian Epiphany celebration.
