About Lalibela

Lalibela contains one of the most remarkable architectural achievements in world history. In the 12th and 13th centuries, artisans carved eleven monolithic churches directly from solid volcanic rock. Rather than building upward, they excavated downward, sculpting entire churches from single stone blocks. The churches remain active places of worship, filled with priests, pilgrims, and chanting liturgies. Lalibela is not merely an archaeological site. It is a living spiritual center of Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity
