About Irreecha Festival (Oromo Thanksgiving)
Irreecha is the largest cultural celebration of the Oromo people. It is a thanksgiving festival held at the end of the rainy season to express gratitude to Waaqa, the Oromo concept of God. The main ceremony takes place near Lake Hora Harsadi in Bishoftu, where millions gather dressed in vibrant cultural clothing. Participants carry green grass, flowers, and traditional sticks called siinqee. The ritual involves touching the water and raising grass to the sky while elders chant blessings. Irreecha is more than a festival. It represents renewal, reconciliation, and collective identity. From a tourism perspective it is one of the most powerful living cultural events in East Africa.
